Ideas for 2012

Posted on January 1, 2012

New Year’s resolutions are often about what we want to give up, what we want to stop doing. But a New Year can also be about starting something new.

All over Cardiff there are people working together to try and make a positive change and getting involved in a community project is also about meeting new and like minded people. Here’s a round of some projects and groups that look exciting for 2012.

Food Projects

Cardiff’s Peoples’ Supermarket Siop y Bobl is looking for more people with a wide variety of skills and interests to get involved with setting up a shop in 2012 – a shop for the people run by the people. Food Not Bombs South Wales are also stepping up their efforts for 2012, giving away free food in Cardiff city centre made from produce that would otherwise be going to waste.

Community Gardens

If you want to make things grow, literally, in 2012 but don’t have any land or just want the expertise and social aspect of doing it in a group, Cardiff has a few community gardens including Riverside Community Allotments, Plasnewydd Community Garden, Llanishen Community Garden and Canton Community Gardens. Orchard Cardiff is also mapping Cardiff’s fruit trees and holding a variety of events for those ‘inspired by fruit’.

Cardiff Transition continues to hold events and spark projects around the sustainable future of Cardiff while CF Hub, which is entering a new and exciting phase for 2012, is a great place to meet other people interested in sustainability issues and share ideas. The best place to keep updated with goings on is by joining the CF Hub Facebook group. In Canton the Carbon Cutters are a group of people have got together to try and reduce the impact of homes in the Canton area.

The Red and Black Umbrella social centre in Splott will also be running into 2012 as will Cardiff’s own currency, Cardiff Taffs. The Taffs have regular meet ups but also operate online. Look out for an update on this on Take Root soon.

What do you want to get involved in for 2012? Please leave a comment with other grassroots projects you know about, or if there’s something particular you want to get involved with, or start up. Maybe some kindred spirits will be reading.

Happy New Year!
